Past Perfect

The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

Examples:

• I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.
• I did not have any money because I had lost my wallet.

Reported speech

If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the speaker’s exact words (direct speech), but reported (indirect) speech.

• Statements

	Example:               He said, “I am happy.” – He said that he was happy.
	Commands in Reported Speech

tell + object + to + infinitive verb

Example:

She said, “Say hello to your mum.“ = She told me to say hello to my mum.

For negative requests, use ‚not to‘ + infinite verb.

Example:

He said, “Don't do that. “= He told me not to do that. 

• Requests in Reported Speech

ask + object + to + infinitive verb  

Example:

She said, "Could you lend me some money?" = She asked me to lend her some money.

She said, "Please don't leave me." = She asked him not to leave her.

• Questions in Reported Speech

In yes/no questions, use "if".

He asked: “Does she live in London?“

.  =        He asked if she lived in London.

In reported wh-questions use the question word : what, where, when, why, how without the auxiliary.
He asked:“Where does she live?“      =    He asked where she lived.

Take a look at these two sentences. What is the difference in meaning between them?

'I cut my hair.'

'I have my hair cut.'

• 'I cut my hair' means that I do it myself.

• 'I have my hair cut means someone cuts my hair for me (in this case it's probably a hairdresser).

• We use have something done to mean another person does a service for us.

• The grammar for this is pretty simple:

• Let's take a look at a few more examples:

'We didn't want to cook so we had a pizza delivered.'
'I had my car washed at that new place by the station.'
'I had my watch fixed.'

1)  Rewrite the sentences using 'have/get something done'.
Example: I'm going to get the shoemaker to mend my shoes.
               I'm going to have/get my shoes mended.

Finally, you've finished this English Access Program . It was a pleasure to work with you and I hope that everything you've learned  helps you in your future life.  This was just a small part of a lot of wonderful things you can do and learn in English, so I hope that many of you keep studying and improving their language abilities. You did a great job and I'm proud to have been your teacher because you're great students and , above all, great people. Thank you for being so kind and respectful. I'll miss you students! (but don't cry... we still have our trip to BsAs. and the final exams!).
